First stop: Irina and Andrei. Two Russian people we know from way back in the nineties, well Irina anyway. They live just to the south of London in Beckenham, in a nice residential area. 30 minutes from the city and in the vicinity of a nice park for Andreas to play in.
Of course we took the opportunity to visit London again. This is becoming my personal favourite city. I took loads of pictures, this is a selection:

The departure. We went Dunkerque-Dover with Norfolk Lines, it’s cheap (EUR 98 return ticket), reasonably fast and boats are more romantic than the Channel Tunnel. We took my parents car, not only because it has airco, but more because it’s bigger and more comfortable to travel in. I had already done loads of crossings by ferry, train, car on the train, plane, Jetfoil, Seacat, Hovercraft to and from Calais, Dunkerque, Oostende, Zeebrugge, Dover, Folkestone, Ramsgate and Hull, but for Andreas it was the first time he was on a ferry. A big event! And a children’s corner becomes such a dull place compared to the whole big ship. We had our hands full to keep him near to us. But it was fun discovering the place together, including the children’s corner.

We hadden het al van ver vooraf gepland, maar de weergoden waren ons meer dan gunstig gestemd. Een prachtige dag voor een familieuitstap. Ikzelf was nog nooit in Planckendael geweest, dus was het voor mij even fascinerend om al die diertjes te zien als voor Andreas. Een vermoeiende, maar tegelijk ook ontspannende dag.

Een uniek evenement in Gent: een ritaankomst. Dit mochten we niet missen, dus zijn we met een paar collega’s van het werk afgezakt naar de aankomstzone. Vlak aan de 1km stonden we. De sfeer zat er goed in…
Volgende zondag zal deze plek er waarschijnlijk heel anders uitzien, dan zijn de Gentse Feesten immers al bezig.
Deze “historische datum” werd vereeuwigd in de fundering van het nieuwe tuinhuisje…
De toegang tot de fabriek had gisterochtend veel weg van de Vlasmarkt na een willekeurige Gentse Feesten-nacht.

Als ik dat lees komt al mijn haar al recht. Het is toch niet omdat er gestaakt wordt, dat plots alle moraal en regels moeten wegvallen zeker! Maar kom, er is natuurlijk ook nog de echte reden van het staken. Eerst was het wat onduidelijk, maar kort gezegd komt het neer op dit: “Volvo Trucks maakt veel winst, wij willen daar ook een graantje van meepikken“. Het blijft wel de vraag of staken daar een oplossing biedt, en zeker als het een wilde staking is zoals nu.
De reden is nog iets of wat te verstaan, alhoewel ik daar ook een kleine randbemerking bij heb: als het slecht zou gaan, zouden ze ook staken als er wat moet ingeleverd worden, maar goed…
Jammer dat een goed draaiend bedrijf die toch altijd de naam heeft gehad van sociaal voelend te zijn, nu ook bij het lijstje stakende automobielbedrijven gevoegd wordt.
Morgen is de laatste dag om de belastingen binnen te doen, dus dacht ik bij mezelf, ik doe het nu al, lekker vroeg. Electronisch natuurlijk. Maar… terwijl ik zit te wachten tot www.taxonweb.be genezen is van het Slashdot effect rap nog deze weekend-foto posten.
